The Evaluation Process

Getting Started

Most begin with a brief call. This will help us determine goals for the evaluation.
(You can schedule the free, 15-minute call HERE.)

Parent Intake Meeting

Once we’ve determined to go forward, the next step is an intake meeting for parents. Held remotely or in person, it typically takes about 45-minutes. We will collect a thorough developmental history and create a game plan for the assessment.

Alignment with a Psychologist  (Psychoeducational Evaluations)

It’s best practice to loop in a psychologist for testing when there are questions about learning and a desire to know if your child has a learning difference, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia. Over the years, I have partnered with a talented group of compassionate psychologists to provide team evaluations (often called psychoeducational evaluations). I can help connect you with a psychologist, who will work with us to uncover how your child learns. Parents and their children benefit from getting two sets of eyes and two perspectives.

Student Academic Testing With Me

Academic testing is completed in person at my office. It’s often two sessions, each 90-minutes to 2-hours in length. Time for breaks and getting to know one another is built in.  If your child needs more warm up time or is feeling a little anxious about the testing, let me know. We can arrange for a short first session with a focus on making a connection before testing begins.

Cognitive and/or Social Emotional Testing with the Psychologist

Testing is completed at the psychologist’s office. One to three sessions, often 2-hours in length, are required depending on the evaluation goals and questions.

Parent Feedback

Once all of the testing is complete, the psychologist and I will both meet with you (remotely or in person) to discuss our findings. We dedicate ample time to talking about next steps so that you have an action plan.

Child Feedback

Upon request, the psychologist or I can also meet with your child to review evaluation findings in a child-centered, child-friendly manner.

Blended Written Report

Parents are provided with a written report outlining results (scores, diagnostic information, insights). The written report also includes recommendations for home and school.

Not sure where to begin? Academic Only Testing.

Some families opt to begin with academic testing only. Academic testing is a deep dive into reading, writing, and/or math skills. Parents walk away with a clearer picture of their child’s academic strengths as well as strategies to improve specific skills, such as reading comprehension or spelling. Action items for home, tutoring, or educational therapy are shared. **While academic only testing will not result in a formal diagnosis, such as dyslexia, it can help inform the need for additional testing.
